Retail Newsletter from Bluestem Nursery Dec 2005
2006 Price List Now Available Online

The 2006 price list for ornamental grasses is now on our website. Visit the Order page for the link to the price list of your choice. The printable PDF version of the price list is not yet ready. When the catalogue is done, it will be sent in the mail to those of you who have subscribed to it and / or have bought from us previously.

Our frigid fields have greatly limited our ability to supply field grown Miscanthus. So this year we are thrilled to be able to offer many more varieties of Miscanthus in 4" pots. By supplying them in this size, the shipping costs to you are much less than they would be in gallon pots.

Willows are Gaining in Popularity

First year S. alba 'Britzensis' plants

The word is out, willows are an new plant group that North American gardeners are excited about exploring. Magazines, newspapers, TV shows and Jim's interview with PBS Radio in the US, have all contributed.

When thinking about willows, please do not think that they are all invasive!! Read our recently added page on Willow Invasiveness. A few (S. babylonica, S. fragilis and S. alba) have given the entire genus a bad rap. That leaves 34 of our 41 varieties in the same category as any shrub or tree of comparable size.

Visit our list of willows and their prices on this page of our website for Canadians and this page for US.

Something Disturbing

We work very hard to provide you with all the information and pictures on our website. Many of you give us such wonderful feedback that it spurs us on to continue to add more. However it is becoming an increasing problem that other websites are stealing our content. I know that you may be thinking "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery", but how is the viewer supposed to know who is the honest one and who is the thief? We don't want to be thought of as cheaters or dishonest!

A few examples where the content was used word for word and nowhere was credit given to the source:

  • one site not only lifted info from 7 pages of our website, but also an article from the National Gardening Association's website, the University of Florida (copyrighted), City of Ottawa's website and the University of Illinois. It appears that not one word of the information on Ornamental Grasses is any of their own creation. Yet their claim is that they are "The Source for Information on Ornamental Grasses".
  • while searching for some basketry willow info to help a person who had emailed us a question, I came upon a page that was not only entirely our content, but put their name on the byline - claiming they wrote it!!!! It took about 3 months, but they finally removed it last week.
  • a large retail nursery lifted our info on spacing ornamental grasses. At least they removed it right away and replaced it with their own information.

And I won't bore you with all our pictures that have been used elsewhere!

It is amazingly easy to find stolen content and in the future I will reveal names if the content is not removed right away. Cheaters need to know that they are not going to get away with it.

On a cheerier note, there are also lots of you who use our info and provide a link back to us. You we love!!

Sorry about the rant.
